Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to life-threatening emergencies in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies.

It will provide you with an understanding of how to apply Basic Emergency Life Support/CPR, defibrillation (AED) until more advanced medical help arrives.

This unit applies to all persons who may be required to provide an emergency response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

The successful achievement of this skill set requires you to complete Unit HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and Unit HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is valid for 36 months (3 years) from the date of course completion.

HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation is valid for 12 months (1 year) from the date of course completion.

Specific licensing/regulatory requirements relating to this competency, including requirements for refresher training should be obtained from the relevant national/state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authorities

This course can be completed at one of our campuses all year round.

It involves e-learning and face-to-face classroom/workplace training and assessment.

Pre-reading and theory assessment precede the six-hour practical skills workshop.

You will receive a small first aid kit and a first aid textbook.

  • Recognise and assess an emergency
  • Ensure safety for self, bystanders, and casualty
  • Seek assistance from emergency services
  • Perform CPR in line with ARC guidelines
  • Appropriate use of an AED
  • Safety and maintenance procedures for an AED
  • Provide first aid in accordance with established first aid principles
  • Manage the casualty in a respectful manner
  • Obtain consent from casualty where possible
  • Use available resources to make the casualty as comfortable as possible
  • Operate first aid equipment according to manufacturers’ instructions
  • Monitor the condition of the casualty and respond in accordance with first aid principles
  • Accurately convey incident details to emergency services
  • Report incident details in line with appropriate workplace or site procedures
  • Complete applicable workplace or site documentation
  • Maintain confidentiality of information in line with statutory or organisational policies
  • Recognise possible psychological impacts on self and other rescuers and seek help when required
  • Contribute to a review of the first aid response as required

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

To meet assessment requirements, you are required to demonstrate two minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR on an adult manikin on the floor, as well as two minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer CPR on an infant manikin.
